FLYERS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Starmail is dedicated to running as eco-friendly a business as possible. Where increased profit and ecology issues conflict, we choose the environmentally responsible option.
All businesses affect the environment to some degree. We believe the best way the flyer industry can reduce its environmental footprint is to reduce waste and promote recycling.
Carriers Who Walk, Not Drive Their Routes
Instead of driving teams of adult carriers around the city, wherever possible we use youth carriers who actually live on their routes. The result is more reliable delivery, virtually no 'dumped' flyers since our carriers care about keeping their own neighbourhood tidy, and no vehicle pollution.
Hand Packing Instead of Using Wasteful Mechanical Systems
Our experience with mechanical packing systems has caused us to return to manual packing to help both the environment and reduce clients' distribution costs.
Mechanical packers typically cause 5% or more flyer wastage. Advertisers are required to print and ship more flyers than are actually delivered. The environment suffers through the printing and transport of these 'throw-away' flyers, and through disposal of the waste.
Precisely Targeted Delivery Achieves Superior Results With Less Flyers
Our unique custom-developed GIS-based software system allows clients to exactly target the households they wish to reach. No need to saturate the entire city, hoping by chance to reach potential customers. Less flyers are delivered to inappropriate households, not only lowering your advertising costs, but also reducing the effect on the environment.
Environmentally Friendly Internal Operations
Wherever possible, Starmail uses environmentally-safe products and materials in our operations. Our offices and warehouse are fitted with energy-saving temperature and lighting systems. We hand-truck pallets around the warehouse instead of using powered (read 'polluting') forklifts. We require staff to reduce energy consumption by turning off all idle electronics equipment, machinery, and unnecessary lighting. These and numerous other small efforts all add up to a reduced environmental footprint.
We Promote Flyer Recycling
We encourage householders to recycle their flyers with messages on our wrappers and other promotional material. Through 'blue box' recycling, yesterday's flyers can become tomorrow's paper goods or perhaps they might even become next week's flyers.
